Crypto: Crazy Gamble or the Future of Your Money?
Let's talk about the thing everyone has an opinion on but very few actually understand.
You’ve heard the debates. You’ve seen the Twitter arguments. You probably have that one uncle who either made a fortune or lost one — and can’t stop talking about it either way.
Today, I want to cut through the noise and give you my actual take on cryptocurrency, what it means for the future of money, and — more importantly — what it means for your financial positioning.
First, a quick history lesson
Money hasn’t always looked the way it does today. We started with trade by barter — bags of grain for livestock, that kind of thing. Then came gold and precious metals. Then paper currency that represented gold held somewhere by a central bank.
Here’s where it gets interesting: the money in your pocket right now? It isn’t backed by gold anymore. It’s backed by trust. That’s it. As economies grew and debt-driven money creation took off, there was simply too much money in circulation for any central bank to hold enough gold to match it. So we agreed, collectively, to trust the paper.
That’s not a criticism — it’s just the reality of how modern money works.
So here’s my question: if we’ve already made the leap from gold bars to paper backed by trust... why is it so hard to imagine making the leap from paper to digital?.
What actually is cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that functions as a medium of exchange. Ownership records are stored on a blockchain — essentially a highly secure, decentralized digital ledger.
When you strip away all the jargon, it’s not that radical. It’s money — just digital, encrypted, and not controlled by any single government or central bank.
And honestly? In a world where we shop online, work online, bank online, and communicate online, a digital currency makes a lot of logical sense.
The real pros (and they’re significant)
Let’s check cryptocurrency against the fundamental characteristics of money:
Fungible? Yes.
Portable? Absolutely — more portable than cash, actually.
Secure? Highly encrypted. Yes.
Scarce? Built-in scarcity, especially for Bitcoin. Yes.
Smart? This is where it gets exciting — programmable money that can execute conditions automatically? That’s a game changer.
The decentralization piece is fascinating too. No single institution controls it. For those of us who’ve watched powerful institutions make decisions that hurt ordinary people, there’s something genuinely appealing about a system where power is distributed.
The real cons (and they matter too)
Let’s be honest here — I’m not here to hype you up and send you off with empty enthusiasm.
It’s unregulated. Cryptocurrency exchanges are legally required to verify who’s on their platform, but the actual transaction trail is encrypted and confidential. Great for personal privacy. Concerning when it comes to funding illegal activity. This is the core reason many governments remain uncomfortable.
There’s no central authority to call when things go wrong. Lose access to your wallet? No customer service. Get scammed? No regulator to complain to. The freedom cuts both ways.
The volatility is real. Prices swing wildly. But here’s how I think about it — most actively traded currencies are volatile. The Naira/Dollar exchange rate moves significantly. The difference is we don’t think of those currencies as investments; we think of them as tools for exchange. If you approach crypto the same way — as a medium of exchange rather than a get-rich-quick scheme — the volatility becomes less alarming.

So where is this going?
Think about the Wright Brothers. When they said humans could fly, people thought they were delusional. Until they weren’t.
When the world shifted from gold to paper currency, I imagine a lot of people were deeply uncomfortable. It felt abstract. Unbothered. Strange.
We are living through that same transition right now — from physical money to digital money. Some countries have banned crypto outright (Nigeria included, for now). Others treat it like a commodity. A few, like Germany, have integrated it into their financial systems.
Businesses are already accepting it. Major companies have invested in it. And in 50 years, I genuinely believe this — or whatever digital currency evolves from it — will be mainstream. Not fringe. Not speculative. Mainstream.
The question isn’t if. The question is whether you’ll be positioned when it gets there.
One more thing before you run off and buy Bitcoin
Understanding that crypto exists is not the same as knowing how to invest. Enthusiasm without strategy is expensive. I’ve seen people make money in crypto and I’ve seen people lose money they couldn’t afford to lose — and the difference was almost always knowledge and timing, not luck.
